Our story begins in 2019 with a friendship between Jennifer and a woman named Landa. Landa was having a difficult time and she needed to move closer to her support team which involved relocating to a studio apartment. The studio was a blessing in many ways, but Landa felt unhappy because it didn’t feel like a cozy home. Because of her finances she had been unable to bring most of her possessions to the new studio apartment. The apartment was bare besides a bed, a chair and a few family heirlooms. Landa felt uncomfortable, though still grateful that she was closer to her Dr’s. Jennifer would stop to visit Landa each week and noticed that she was falling into a significant depression. She had stopped entertaining visitors, stopped reading, and stopped getting out of bed. Seeing Landa’s depression worsening, Jennifer had the idea to use a local thrift store to buy furniture for her to create a cozy Homelike atmosphere. Landa had always desired to own a little cottage away from city life.
Jennifer was able to buy enough furniture and create a place to sit, watch TV, a place for evening dinners, and a place to create a cozy bedroom. Landa began to get out of bed, she began to reconnect with her family and friends. Her mood continued to improve, as did her overall health. She was no longer depressed. Landa is still living in the same apartment, she and Jennifer are even closer friends. She uses the phrase “happily content” to describe her living situation now. She and Jennifer continue their close friendship to this day. |
In December of 2021 right before Christmas, Jennifer and Christina furnished an apartment for a woman leaving a severe domestic violence environment. Mother and daughter ran in the middle of the night with only a bag of clothes, fearing for their lives. Finally, they were able to move into their new life, and as of this writing, they are still happily living away from their abuser.
In Jan 2022, Jennifer and Christina began thinking of ways to contribute to womens causes, both having a desire to be of help to less fortunate, abused victims who just needed help starting a new life. Jennifer was still friends with Landa, and Christina still had contact with the women who lives in the “Christmas apartment” with her daughter. The idea to help victims of domestic violence and their children began to grow in focus. Christina and Jennifer worked together on this idea. We asked around to see if anyone wanted to join our new mission, and that’s when Natalie joined the effort. In March of 2022, “Homemakers” was born. We look forward to helping as many women and children leave violent domestic relationships as we can. Our goal is to help these families thrive away from those toxic environments. By furnishing their modest new homes, we are removing a large financial hurdle for these families. We hope this helps them to feel that they are strong enough, with support, to thrive in a new life. |

Homemakers will help domestic abuse survivors, many referred from mental health agencies and shelters, escape a life of fear. Homemakers is a small new charity busy filling a great need. We have a good team, we all work together well using our talents to help one family at a time. We’ve been able to help parent(s) and children start new lives and we look forward to helping many more families transition to a new, safe and healthier life. We know that we have a chance to change the trajectory of the lives of a survivor, and especially the children we are serving. Nothing is more satisfying in our work than helping victims of Domestic Violence gain healing, confidence and self-respect. |
